Memorial Day weekend, the somewhat
unofficial beginning of summer , is finally here. Enjoy and be safe
Memorial Day is more than just summer
fun, horseshoes, grilling and beer drinking. Itis a day to remember
and honor those who have sacrificed their lives in the US military.
Once called Decoration Day, it's actual beginnings are rather murky
in regards to where the holiday had it's very beginnings.
One thing is certain, it began shortly
after the horrific American Civil War when citizens began to
“decorate” the graves of the war dead, a tradition that still
lives.
Memorial Day is a solemn day for
reflection, prayer, and remembrance.

Representatives from Drakes Mills and
members of the Drake family prepared an historical
presentation about Drakes Mills and the
old mill building that stood by Conneauttee Creek. Pete
Mathews, a former resident of Drakes
Mills and now living in Venango Township, will talk
about the history and development of
Drake's Mill and the community surrounding it, an area
located 4.5 miles south of Edinboro and
"over the line" in Crawford County.
This will be the second presentation of
this program. It will be held on Wedesday, May 27th in
the basement social room of St. Paul's
Evangelical Lutheran Church. The church is located at
25812 Mt. Pleasant Road in Drakes
Mills. The program will start at 7:00 PM. Refreshments
will be available.
The group encourages people to bring
any Drakes Mills memorabilia to the meeting on the 27th
so those attending can have the
opportunity to see the material first-hand..
